Canada Worker Benefit
Canada Workers Benefit (CWB): What It Is and How It Helps Working Canadians
The Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) is a refundable tax credit designed to provide financial support to working individuals and families with low or modest income. It’s intended to supplement earnings and reduce the tax burden on people who are actively employed but still facing financial challenges.
How the CWB Works
At tax time, eligible individuals claim the CWB on Line 45300 of their income tax return by completing Schedule 6. The benefit is refundable, which means that if the credit amount is more than the taxes you owe, you’ll receive the difference as a payment or added to your tax refund.
Who Is Eligible
To qualify for the CWB, you must meet certain basic criteria:
- Have earned working income during the year.
- Be a resident of Canada throughout the tax year.
- Be at least 19 years old by December 31 of the tax year — unless you live with a spouse/common-law partner or have a child.
- Your net income must be below a threshold set for your province or territory of residence.
There are some specific disqualifiers — for example, being a full-time student for more than 13 weeks in the year (unless you have an eligible dependant), being imprisoned for 90 days or more, or being exempt from Canadian tax (e.g., certain diplomats).
There’s also a disability supplement available if you or your spouse/common-law partner are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit.
How Much You Can Get
The amount of the CWB you receive depends on your income level, family situation and province or territory of residence. For the most recent tax years, the maximum basic benefit (before phase-outs) has been around:
- Approximately $1,590 for a single individual
- Approximately $2,739 for a family
An additional disability supplement of up to about $821 may be included if you’re eligible.
The credit amount is gradually reduced (“phased out”) once your family’s net income rises above specified thresholds.
Advance Payments: Making It Easier Throughout the Year
The CRA offers Advanced Canada Workers Benefit (ACWB) payments for those eligible. If you qualify when you file your tax return, the CRA can begin paying up to 50 % of your CWB entitlement in advance over the benefit year — typically in three quarterly installments (e.g., July, October and January).
You don’t need to apply separately for ACWB; simply filing your tax return with eligibility for the CWB will trigger automatic advance payments.
Claiming the Credit
To claim the CWB:
- File your tax return by the deadline.
- Complete Schedule 6 – Canada Workers Benefit.
- Enter the calculated amount on Line 45300 of your return.
If you have a spouse or partner and both of you are eligible for different parts of the credit (e.g., disability supplement), Schedule 6 will guide who should claim what amount.
Why the CWB Matters
The Canada Workers Benefit is an important tool for improving the financial situation of lower-income workers by:
- Providing direct tax relief at tax time
- Offering refundable benefits that can increase your refund or reduce taxes owing
- Helping with budgeting through advance quarterly payments during the year
If you worked and earned income but think you might have missed claiming the CWB in prior tax years, you may be able to file an adjustment — just speak with a tax professional or use CRA’s “Change My Return” option in My Account.
